Located right along San Pablo Bay, the town of Hercules got its name during the late-19th century, when it was California Powder Works main manufacturing facility for Hercules powder, a patented dynamite formulation. Until the 1970s, it was considered a “company town.” However, its proximity to San Francisco inspired its transformation into a Bay Area bedroom community.
In 2000, the city’s leaders made a concentrated effort to protect undeveloped areas from urban sprawl, and to redevelop the industrialized waterfront – and the city made history in 2006 when their town council voted unanimously to keep Walmart from opening a store there, eventually buying the land back from Walmart in 2009.
