About Pinole
Pinole was named for a type of flour made from local plants and flowers by the indigenous tribes who once called this area home. Like other cities and unincorporated towns in the Bay Area, Pinole moved from an indigenous land, to part of a Mexican land grant – granted to Ignacio Martinez in 1823, to a contemporary community. Beginning the thriving hacienda Martinez established (at the site where Pinole Valley Park is located) and a successful trading company, established by Portuguese immigrant Bernardo Fernandez (at what is now the historic Fernandez Mansion), Pinole has evolved into a thriving small Bay Area town into throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries.
The population and economy continued to thrive with the introduction of the Southern Pacific Railroad, and with the opening of the successful California Powder Works in nearby Hercules. With the completion of I80 in the late 1950s, Pinole went from a thriving small town to thriving San Francisco bedroom community, which is the role it continues to play today.
While the downtown community still enjoys historic 19th and early 20th-century architecture, modernists and post-modernists appreciate a big box shopping store district, as well as the Pinole Vista Shopping Center. Residents also look forward to the annual Northern California Cruisers Annual Car Show.
